Travel in Kurunegala
Kurunegala is the capital city of the northwestern province.according to the history; King Parakramabahu iii selected the Kurunegala city as his kingdom. King Parakramabahu ruled the Kurunegala kingdom from 1287 to 1293.
The history says it reveals King Parakramabahu was the 1st king of the Kurunegala kingdom. After his death, Over the next half a century Kurunegala was the capital and the governing center for three other kings of Sri Lanka.
There are 94km from the Colombo and 42km from the Kandy to Kurunegala. The city located at an altitude of 116 meters (381 ft) above sea level.

ETHUGALA(ELEPHANT ROCK)
The rock got the name "Ethugala" meaning (Elephant rock) merely because of its shape like an Elephant. There is a statue of massive Lord Buddha on the Ethugala, and it is a spiritual object rather than another construction and the Buddha statue in samadhi pose.
The best time to visit is 5.30 pm as the environment as well as the rock would be more relaxed.Try to see the sunset here. It will be an unforgettable experience in Kurunegala. But never forget that you are in a place of worship.
Anyway, you can enjoy a panoramic view from the top. It is a beautiful view.
There are three paths to go for the mountain top. You can reach there by own vehicle or can use another way with a little bit of adventure.
You can have a picturesque view from the top of the rock. It will take about 1hour maximum to the end.
Ethugala is within 5 minutes' drive on a safe road from the city center. The excellent place to discover the city of Kurunagala as well as the ancient capital. It will take little time to walk through the jungle and remember to avoid walking in the night.
Hill's top temple is a serene place. Be there and enjoy the natural surroundings and feel the spiritual environment. The very high wind here.
Lots of people visit the temple on full moon poya days. So the parking can be a little bit difficult in those days and better to avoid going on a vehicle. Even don't do night visits.
It can be a bit windy at the top, but The Buddha statue and the aerial view is beautiful in the evening/night for the photograph..
YAKDESSAGALA MOUNTAIN
There are 14KM from the Kurunegala center to Yakdessagala mountain. It is not easy hiking, but after going to the destination viewpoint, it gives more value for your hike.
Don't forget to bring a 2L water bottle for each. Nice environment. Can see arrow signs from beginning to the top of the mountain.No need of a guide.
It will take two hours to get to the top of the mountain, from the top of the mountain you can experience breathtaking views and beautiful sunrise.
RIDEE VIHARAYA, KURUNEGALA
'Ridee Viharaya' is 20km away from Kurunegala town and has an access road from Kurunegala-Dambulla main road. You should have a visit here when you approach or pass Kurunegala town.
Ruins of an ancient temple and we can see well-maintained premises during the walk. Ample parking space available for visitors. Historical Story says that monks have meditated in caves here from earlier, and one of them was Indaguptha thero.
A troop of traders who have arrived in the Ridee Viharaya area has found Jackfruit, and on the way, they have given these to monks as alms. The cave where this happened is still preserved. And, later these traders have found that there is a silver mine nearby and informed King Dutugemunu on it. This silver has been then taken to the construction of Ruwanweliseya.
As gratitude, King Dutugemunu has gifted a golden standing Buddha statue to this temple, which is still present in the temple. Also, you can see many Sri Lankan unique wood carvings here, when you travel in Kerunegala
MAKULANA TEMPLE
Makulana Rajamaha Viharaya is located at Mawathagama 3km from the mawathagama junction and 15km from the Kurunegala. There is a beautiful view around the tempe.the Makulana Viharaya has a proud history.
Accourding to the history Makulana temple was built by King Parakrama bahu iii in 14th century.
RAMBADAGALLA VIHARAYA
The biggest Buddhist statue in the world (Samadi pose). It looks like a live Load Buddha. Very calming and lovely place I had ever seen. The best fact is you don't need to be Buddhist to visit here
if you travel in Kurunegala, don't forget to visit Rambadagalla viharaya. There are 19km from the Kurunegala to Rambadagalla Viharaya.
