Yapahuwa served as the capital of Sri Lanka from 1273 to 1284. It was a palace and military stronghold against foreign invaders. When king Buvanekabahu transferred to Yapahuwa, he brought the Sacred Tooth Relic with him and kept in the Tooth Temple at the top of the third staircase. Yapuhuwa protected the tooth relic for about 11 years. After King Buvanekabahu in 1284, the Pandyans of South India invaded Sri Lanka again, and the relics carried away from the temple to South India. King Parakkramabahu then recovered In 1288 and temporarily placed them in safety at Polonnaruwa. With the incursion of Pandyans, the kingdom was largely abandoned and inhabited by Buddhist monks and religious ascetics.

The palace and fortress were built by King Buvanekabahu, who was the son of King Parakramabahu, in 1272. He transferred the capital of Sri Lanka. On top of the rock in this historical site you can see the remains of a stupa, a Bodhi tree enclosure, and a cave used by Buddhist monks. Earlier, this historical site has used as a Buddhist monastery. Other than here, you can see the remains of the number of buildings and a Buddhist temple named Yapahuwa Rajamaha Viharaya.
